About
One person, one game
I am building the grow sim I wanted to play and could not find. Everything in it is modelled rather than faked, which is slower to build and, I think, the only way it is worth doing.
I am Sebse. I write every line of Understory and I make every asset in it. There is no team. When something in the game is wrong, it is mine.
What the game is
Understory is a single-player cultivation and management sim set on an island in the Ozarks. Light, air, water and feed are modelled rather than abstracted, so a plant that struggles is telling you something specific. Build out a room, then a building, then a district, and find out how far you can push a grow before the arithmetic stops forgiving you.
The short version is that I wanted a grow sim where the plant responds to what you actually did rather than to a hidden timer, and I could not find one. So I am building it. Light, air, water and feed are modelled. A plant that is struggling is struggling for a reason you can find.
Why I post about it
Two reasons, and only one of them is noble. The useful one is that writing a thing down forces me to understand it, and I have solved several problems purely by trying to explain them here. The other is that a game nobody has heard of sells nothing, and this is the cheapest marketing available to someone with no budget.
I will post the mistakes as well as the wins. Devlogs that only show the good weeks are not much use to anyone, and I do not have the patience to pretend.
What you will not find here
No advertising and no affiliate links. If I mention a tool it is because I use it. The only thing I am selling is the game, and it is not finished.
